Currently with my project I have received the supplies we ordered for the auction. We got TONS of paint, canvases, and brushes. The Hope Center and I have had spacey communication, so while that project is still going to happen I have branched out to another project to start in the meantime. Before fall break I talked with the art director at the Hope Center and got her to review papers I had made to give to the women. The first is a general overview of what the auction is and how it benefits them. The other paper is a questionnaire asking them about their core values, favorite foods, and hobbies. I asked them these questions to get to know them, give them ideas for painting, and even get ideas for a surprise dream day. The dream day would take place after the auction and all of the money is raised. The art director thought using the funds to surprise the women with a dream day was a great idea! So now I am just waiting on a start date as I have all of the papers printed, supplies gathered, and plan set. Once I get a start date I can organize an auction date with the director and then talk to a nearby church about hosting the auction. My second project in the mean time is going to elementary/middle schools in our area and helping kids who may be struggling in school or who may just need a break. I will do art therapy with them and really just be a mentor/friend. I will be using the materials below since we have so much to take to the schools and use with the kids. The supplies we got are featured above, and while we got much more than just what is shown these are the items we ordered. The paint is great because if we would donate what is left of the paint after the auction pieces are done than the women can have them in easy tubs. Another great thing is that it makes easier for me to take it from place to place. The large number of paintbrushes and canvases are awesome because we have enough to do multiple projects!

The Hope Center art auction is exactly what it sounds like, but it will do more than you think it will. The plan for the art auction is to go to the Hope Center and work with the women there on creating paintings, then selling the paintings at an auction night with all of the funds going back to the Hope Center for needed materials or for a Dream Day. This project was thought of by myself and has never been done before. I thought about working with the women at the Hope Center because I know that sometimes the people that feel like they have no voice sometimes have the best way of expressing what they do not know how to say. The reason I picked having them make art is because of art therapy. Art therapy is a beneficial form of therapy where the person receiving it does not feel under pressure to find words to express their emotions. I hope by using art therapy the women there will be more relaxed and be able to relieve any stress or types of emotions they normally do not focus on. With the art auction and selling the pieces I hope to give them enough funds to help them get materials they may need or do something different and providing a sort of dream day for them where they get to choose what they do with the funds. Coming up with the idea was a little bit of a struggle because once I had it all planned out I had to get in contact with the Hope Center. This included multiple phone calls, emails, as well as a couple of visits before I finally had a scheduled meeting. The woman in charge of the art program at the Hope Center was willing to start the project, but never had time for a meeting. Another issue was finding time for me to actually go to the Hope Center and be able to bring an art teacher/more experienced mentor. Once the project begins my estimation is that it will take around 6-7 weeks. I figure if I go once a week during class, and then two or three days after school it would add up to about that. The auction night would be held roughly a week after paintings are finished so that I have time to gather all the art and bring it to the auction site. On the right hand side of my page you see a powerpoint, that is what I used to present on my pitch day. Presenting in front of the principal and people who do a lot in the school community was a very cool experience and one that was a lot less nerve-wracking than I thought it would be. Presenting I think I would have only had a bit more information to present but given the time frame I felt I did good. |
